An Interview with Masters Champion Laurie Carver
The Impact of the First CrossFit Masters Event
In 2010, the CrossFit Games added the Masters Division for athletes fifty and older. Laurie Carver claimed the Master Women’s title after edging out the competition with her consistency. Other athletes claimed first place in each particular event, but Carver remained in the Top 3 for all of the events.
When asked what she learned from competing in the Games, Carver replied that she learned “not to get too comfortable with your own gym and routines, and to train in different situations out of that comfort zone.” In addition to nerves, Games athletes have to be able to work in spite of different music, equipment, and pull-up bars, not to mention crowds, clocks, and judges.
Now, Carver tries to “mix it up as much as possible” so that she can compete in whatever conditions competition provides. For training, she is “following the mainsite regularly, increasing [her] strength through 5.3.1, and working on [her] weaknesses.” So far it’s been working well, she has been “setting PR’s often, and seeing a big difference just since July.”
She suggested two things she would like to see in future Masters competition: more events, “at least six,” and heavier weights in the timed workouts. The 2010 Masters competition involved three events, and the two timed workouts, Fran and Nancy, had the female competitors lifting 65 lb. barbells.

Thank you for the insight of your journey. I am training to compete in the 2012 games and have been frustrated in the lack of communication from the masters athletes. Thank you for sharing your experience. Any other tidbits would be appreciated.

Jerome – Thank you for the compliments! You were awesome to watch at both regionals and the games! I hope to see you at 2011 regionals!
Cathy – Congratulations on your goal for 2012. My current training goals are to train like I’m competing in the individual open. So, I follow Mainsite and compare my times with the games female athletes who post. I train to be able to do the wods and weights that show up in their events. In addition to MS, I program additional wods geared toward my weaknesses and follow Wendler 531 to increase my strength.
