2010 CrossFit Games Finals

Insight into the CrossFit Games

Dave Castro, Dave Lipson, and Rob Orlando Discuss the Games

Dave Castro has been at the core of the CrossFit Games since their inception in 2007. He recently spent some time with Dave Lipson, Rob Orlando, and Dave Millar as part of the California Road Trip series, featured in the CrossFit Journal. All three athletes have experience in the Games. Lipson competed in the CrossFit Games in 2008 and 2009. Orlando came in 22nd in 2009 and 15th in 2010. Dave Millar finished in 9th in 2009.

Dave Castro raised the issue of body types and performance. Different types of programming favor different body types. If mostly larger guys are in the top 5, it could be because the programming was skewed in their favor. On the other hand, if guys like Chris Spealler and Russell Berger are all at the top, then it's possible that the Games' programming was skewed in the other direction.

Rob Orlando then asked Dave if any strongman implements would be featured in 2011. Dave replied with what could be the CrossFit Games' motto, "Anything's possible."

It's very clear that the programming for the Games as implemented by Dave is aimed at giving a broad and even coverage of all skills and modal domains so as not to benefit either the little or big guy. But does that inherrently favor the medium build guy?

Not that I have a problem with that. At 6"3" I'll never complain that my size is a disadvantage, even if the sports I got into later in lif like kayaking and climbing are less forgiviing for clydsdales. Dunking in the 7th grade was worth the lack of pullups :-)

I guess I'm wondering if there was ever a thought that you would program say 75 - 80% of the games, and then let chance choose the other 20 - 25%? Would a few hopper events make for a "fairer" competition? Life doesn't always favor the "average" sized guy, right.

Either way, the pressure that Dave has to program this thing is extraordinary. Clearly you guys are doing an unbeleiva ble job. I never thought in a million yars I would be watching with anticipation, videos of people sitting in a van talking about training! But here I am.
