Jason Khalipa and Tommy Hackenbruck On Competition
On paper, Team Rogue has an awe-inspiring line-up of athletes, including five previous CrossFit Games champions. By the end of Day One though, their performance had not lived up to expectation. Team Again Faster's athlete Pat Barber did some ridiculously fast rope climbs in the Event Eleven team chipper, which snatched back Rogue's hopes of building some momentum. That loss left Rogue trailing Again Faster by 22 to 8.
With one day left, there was time left for a comeback, but Rogue's Jason Khalipa and Tommy Hackenbruck were not happy with their team's performance. Jason observed that "if you're not a little disappointed right now, then you probably shouldn't be here."
Tommy was also upset about the score, but he recognized the value of being pushed into unfomfortable areas. At their home gyms, most elite CrossFitters can get lulled into complacency. Regular competition with the best in the sport will keep them humble and focused on improving their weak points. Tommy thinks that this type of regular competition will help CrossFit's elite stay at the top longer.
