Burg Speaks on Heather's Missed Snatches
Coach Mike Burgener advised Heather Bergeron on how to approach the CrossFit/USAW Open. Coach Burgener is a very talented and well-respected weightlifting coach, and Heather finished eighth at the 2010 CrossFit Games.
The Open was Heather's first weightlifting competition, so Heather needed some advice on what weight to open with in the snatch. After taking a look at Heather's training numbers, Burgener advised her to open with 60 kilos.
In her warm-ups at the competition, everything was going well until she missed a snatch a 55 kilos. Burgener didn't have time to lower her assigned 60 kilo first attempt. Heather then had to go on the platform to snatch a weight 5 kilos heavier than the one she had just missed.
She missed all three snatch attempts. She went on to clean and jerk 78 kilos, the second highest lift in her weight class, and took second place in her weight class on the triplet with over 6 rounds. These performances earned her sixth place in the 63 kilo weight class despite going 0 for 3 on the snatch. Had she made just a 50 kilo snatch, though, she would have come in second.
The lesson? Choose your attempts very conservatively in a weightlifting meet, especially in your first competition.
