Interview with Matt Chan at the CF/USAW Open
The Overall Event Leader in Points
Matt Chan not only won the 94 kilogram weight class at the CrossFit/USAW Open, but he won a title that the organizers of the event hadn't even planned to award. Competitors were ranked by combining their best snatch and clean and jerk in kilos with their total number of repetitions on the circuit. Chan achieved a higher point total than any other athlete at the Open.
Weightlifters don't normally compete between different weight classes, but Chris Spealler's monstrous 559 point total had inspired some interest in who would get the highest point total at the Open. Chan ended up with making a total score 563, but thinks he would have hit an even higher total had Tony Budding not whispered the score to beat in his ear just prior to the Triplet.
There was perhaps some extra sweetness in this victory for Chan, who finished one place behind Spealler at the 2010 CrossFit Games. Despite winning the highest point total, Chan did not do much specific training for the event. Instead he stuck to the CrossFit standard of training for the unknown and unkowable, and relied on the strength of his new mustache to add kilos to his olympic lifts.
