An Interview with Kendrick Farris
An American Record Holder Speaks at the CrossFit/USAW Open
Coach Mike Burgener has described Kendrick Farris as one of the best American lifters of all time. He clean and jerked 203 kilograms (447.5 pounds), at a bodyweight of 85 kilograms (187.4 pounds) in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, earning him the American world record. Kendrick placed 8th in the world in his weight class in Beijing. In training, Kendrick has clean and jerked 218 kilos, tying the world record for the clean and jerk in his weight class.
Kendrick was on hand at the CrossFit/USAW Open as a commentator and analyst. Tony Budding got the chance to sit down with him, alongside fellow olympian Natalie Burgener, to talk about his training and expectations. Kendrick plans to break the world record in the clean and jerk in competition in 2011. He's not quite as confident with the snatch, however, with his competition best 160 kilos (352.7 pounds.) Kendrick blames his imperfect technique for this discrepany in performance.
With many CrossFitters competing in an official weightlifting competition for the first time at the Open, Kendrick reminisced about his first competition. At just twelve years old, Kendrick competed in his first weightlifting meet. He won the event, but he was also the only competitor in his weight class.
