An Interview With Austin Malleolo at the CF/USAW Open
Comparing the Open with the Games
Austin Malleolo finished 6th in the 2010 CrossFit Games, but the Games' test of broad capacity was very different from the demands of the CrossFit/USAW Open. Austin succeeded in this new environment, taking third place in the 77 kilo class. He finished with a 93 kilo snatch, 124 kilo clean and jerk, and over 6 rounds of the triplet.
James Hobart of Again Faster sat down with Austin the next day to ask him about his thoughts on the Open. Austin certainly felt the effect of the previous day's workouts, but he was not "demolished" like he was after the games. In fact, it was similar to how he feels after "a normal day of training."
In contrast with the CrossFit games, Austin knew what was going to happen ahead of time, so he had weeks to specifically prepare. This information did not make it easy, though. Austin had no experience with the intricacies of a weightlifting meet.
His relied on his coach Kevin Houston to help him deal with the details. On competition day, Kevin told him when to warm-up and go on the platform. All Austin had to do was show up and lift.
When he was done competing, though, the show was not over. It was cool to see elite lifters like Chad Vaughn, who he'd only been able to see lift on youtube before.
