Cutting Weight and the CrossFit/USAW Open

Natalie Burgener Gives Advice on Weight-Cutting Strategy

Cutting weight is common practice in sports that involve weight classes such as Olympic weightlifting. Weightlifters usually train at a heavier weight than their weight class, and then cut down a few kilograms for competition.

In this video, Natalie Burgener, who represented the U.S. in the 2008 Olympic Games, gives advice on cutting weight for the CrossFit/USAW Open. The issues of whether to cut and how much weight to cut depend upon the individual characteristics of an athlete. The CrossFit/USAW open presents a different scenario than a typical weightlifting meet. The athletes competing come from different training backgrounds and will be asked to perform a much higher volume of work in competition. They also may have different physical characteristics than the average weightlifter.
