Kristan Clever: On Lifting At High Heart Rates
Behind the scenes with the female champ
Kristan Clever is an amazing athlete. She secured the top spot overall in the very first event of the 2010 Games with a blazing time of 5:04. That's 2 full minutes ahead of the next competitor.
On Saturday morning she set her sights on the next task: attacking an event that fell on the other side of the spectrum from Friday night's sprint.
Event 2 began with 3 rounds of Helen combined into one. In this video from Again Faster, a confident Kristan laughed about the difficulty of doing "regular Helen," and speculated on how she would perform in the 'marathon' event.
She also talked strategy for the overhead element. Athletes had to complete a max shoulder to overhead lift within 90 seconds of finishing "Hell-in." Clever is known to have strong overhead lifts, but a high heart rate or a poor strategy could wreak havoc on an athlete's score. She explored multiple opening weights before deciding to "wing it." The strategy worked out for her - she took 2nd and 1st overall in events 2a and 2b, respectively.
Kristan will compete in the upcoming CrossFit/USAW Open October 1-3 in Colorado Springs. The event is being hosted by the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. It's not too late to register online.
