Q & A with Kristan Clever
Catching up with the 2009 4th place finisher.
Kristan Clever finished first at the SoCal Regional Qualifier last year and fought her way to a fourth place finish in Aromas last summer. This year we caught a glimpse of the improvement she has made in the past year when she dominated the SD/AZ Sectional event and swept the competition.
The 2009 events were brutal, how did you recover from last year's Games?
Right after the games I partied with some of the other SoCal girls, so I took Monday off. I was back in the gym Tuesday. I haven't really changed my training much, just tried to really make myself improve at the stuff I'm not good at.
Picture yourself walking out of the tunnel at the Home Depot Center in front of thousands of screaming CrossFit fans; Are you excited about the new venue?
The stadium is going to be a little more intense with the athletes being completely surrounded by spectators. I think that's going to feel pretty wild. It definitely adds to the excitement of it all and it's going to make staying calm and focused a bit more challenging.
Assess yourself against this year's field. What would you most like to see as far as WODs? As the competition grows, who do you view as the toughest female competitor?
I think I have as good a shot as anyone coming to the finals this year. I would love to see WODs with lots of gymnastic elements. I don't know who the toughest female competitor might be but last year I think we were all impressed by Annie Thorisdottir, and I expect that she will be a force this year as well.
Have you always loved competition?
I've played basketball since I was a small kid. I also did a little track and field in high school, became a gym rat, a runner and now a CrossFitter. I don't think I really love competition, but it's fun and it gives a perspective of where you stand against others.
Did it sting when the tie break didn’t fall in your favor last year?
No, the tiebreak didn't really sting. I went into day 2 almost expecting to finish outside of top 3, given the points spread - usually my instincts are right.
You competed at the SD/AZ Sectional this year as an individual and on your team at the Southwest Regional, even though you are prequalified for the Games. You dominated the field in San Diego. Talk about your experience in those competitions.
The SD/AZ Sectional was fun! I did alright despite being sleep deprived on day one. I was thankful for the opportunity to compete, as there is no better time and place than actual competition to get the mental game together. The affiliate competition is super fun also! I would love to compete as a team member sometime in the future. I think if our team had qualified this year I would have wanted to do both the individual and team competition.
What's your Favorite dessert?
Super unhealthy would have to be apple pie a la mode. Kinda less unhealthy would be fresh fruit with Michele Vieux's magic Creamsicle Dip
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
