Schlicht, Silber take an early lead.
The CrossFit Games feature a masters division for the first time in 2010.
The first workout that challenged the athletes 50 and over at the time of the Games was five rounds of a 400-meter run and 15 overhead squats (95/65 lb.).
Two female athletes stood out well above the rest: Gabriele Schlicht and Laurie Carver. The two dueled throughout the workout, and Schlicht finished only three seconds ahead of Carver with a time of 14:10. Heidi Fish was third with 16:25.
On the men’s side, Larry Silber crushed the workout in a hot time of 13:42 to finish first in the opening event of the Masters competition. Brian Curley was second in 13:50, and Jon Hults was third with 14:36.
“I didn’t want to admit it but Nancy is one of my favorite workouts. I was psyched,” said Silber, the 51-year-old chiropractor from Seattle, Wash., while dabbing blood off his head from a dropped overhead squat. “I’ve been CrossFitting for a few years, but I’ve only really been training for competition since March. It’s been an eye-opener, but I’m having fun.”
