All Over the Map: Berry and Tovar
Games veterans Stacie and Breck talk strategy
With exactly one week until the competition, the CrossFit Journal continues coverage of the Games competitors. 3181 Miles down the road and Ian Wittenber is so busy picking up interviews of the 2010 CrossFit Games athletes, he hasn’t even stopped to shave. Visiting this time with South Central athlete Breck Berry and North Central athlete Stacie Tovar, Wittenber is closing in on the Home Depot Center, one interview at a time.
Berry has been CrossFitting for years. He’s been in the mix of the Games since 2007, with his top finish coming in 2007 with a finishing place of 5th overall. As the owner and manager of CrossFit Jenks, plus a new father, Berry has a lot on his plate. His consistency in sticking with the CrossFit protocol has payed dividends over the years though, as he managed to take 2nd at a very stacked South Central Regional.
Tovar has been training under the watchful gaze of Ricky “Omaha Ricky” Frausto. Her strength and speed carried her all the way through the end of the first day of the 2009 CrossFit Games, but failed to make the cut for the Sunday show, finishing 36th on the weekend. Following a weakness biased program over the last few months has helped her round out her program and she’s hopeful of what’s to come in LA.
Will Berry’s fifth year at the Games be his time to shine? Can Tovar’s attack on her weaknesses do what it takes to top the box? Only time will tell.
