Quest for the Cup: North Central Regional
The first regional competition went down April 30-May 2 in Castle Rock, Colo., as a host of athletes and teams competed at 6,210 feet for spots in the 2010 CrossFit Games in Los Angeles.
Fittest Over 50
In another first, the 2010 CrossFit Games will feature a Masters division in which the top 15 men and top 15 women born on or before July 15, 1960, will compete to become the world’s fittest person over 50.
The First Four Women
The North Central competition was the first regional event of the 2010 CrossFit Games season, with 50 women vying for only four spots at the big show in Los Angeles.
Back to the Games?
The North Central event kicked off the regional competition season and hosted a number of top CrossFit men chasing four spots in the CrossFit Games in L.A. Former Games competitors including Patrick Burke, Matt Chan, Ricky Frausto, Pat Sherwood and others made stiff competition a certainty.
Fresh Blood: The Northwest Regional
The women’s competition at the Northwest Regional featured a field of 50 women vying for three qualifying spots, with former Games competitors Cyndi Frieling, Kallista Pappas and Jenny Olson certain to figure in the battle. HQ trainers and affiliate owners Miranda Oldroyd and Nadia Shatila also promised to make things exciting at the competition held May 15-16 in Puyallup, Wash.
No I in Team
Affiliate Cup competitions are always about teamwork, but the Northwest Regional event in Puyallup, Wash., took that idea one step further with a two-person clean and jerk.
Veterans’ Victory: The Northwest Regional
The men’s competition at the Northwest Regional contained 66 athletes, including 2009 Games competitors Chris Spealler, Eric O’Connor, Jerome Perryman, Zach Forrest and Jordan Holland. Also in the mix was HQ trainer Todd Widman, as well as Moe Kelsey, who is pre-qualified for the 2010 Games via his 2009 podium finish. The event was held May 15-16 in Puyallup, Wash.
Vests and Sleds: The Northeast Regional
Twenty-one teams gathered for the Affiliate Cup competition at the Northeast Regional, held May 21-23 in Albany, N.Y. Each team consisted of six athletes, with four competing in each workout.
Orlando to Los Angeles: The Northeast Regional
The men’s competition at the Northeast Regional was held May 22-23 in Albany, N.Y. The field of athletes included 2009 Games competitors Rob Orlando, James Hobart and Dave Lipson, along with standouts Eric Magee, Austin Malleolo, Mike McKenna, Dennis Marshall and Steve Liberati.
Old Country, New Sport: The Europe Regional
Last year’s Europe Regional was a small event that nevertheless produced the 2009 CrossFit Games men’s champion. Still, it didn’t showcase the full talent of the area, and no women represented the continent in Aromas.
In 2010, the Europe Regional was a different story, with almost 60 competitors vying for a total of six spots in the CrossFit Games. This time around, the nation of Iceland was included in the event, meaning top 16 Games competitors Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson and Annie Thorisdottir would be battling for spots. Making things even more interesting, American Blair Morrison joined the fray. After finishing seventh in last year’s Games, Morrison has spent the year studying and training in Europe.
