Northwest Regional Events Announced
Athletes have their work cut out for them in Puyallup.
Six regional competitions remain in the lead up to the CrossFit Games finals in Los Angeles this July. This weekend qualified athletes from the Northwest region will square off in Puyallup, Washington in hopes of securing one of 3 spots to the Home Depot Center. Organizers Kurtis and Laurie Bowler of Rainier CrossFit have released the challenges that face the athletes at the fairgrounds this weekend. Here's what they had to say.
"Here's what you've been waiting for! MOST of the information is here. Some will not be revealed until Saturday Night. We will provide a video demonstration of the movement standards shortly. The times listed are tentative and subject to change with the flow of the day."
Individual Event 1 (9:00-11:15am)
3 Rounds for time of:
10 Overhead Squats (135/95lbs)
50 Double-unders
There is a 12 minute cap on this workout. For the overhead squat, take the barbell from the floor, not a rack. The movement starts with the barbell over head (elbows locked out and arm blocking the ear). The hips must pass below the level of the knees at the bottom. At the top there must be full lockout of the knees, hips, and elbows with the barbell over the head (arm blocking the ear). You may squat-snatch directly into the overhead squat if you meet the above requirements, but that is not required. For the double-unders, the rope must past twice under the feet each rep. Missed attempts do not count.
Affiliate Event 1 (11:30 – 12:30)
Row/Run Relay
Each team will have a Concept 2 rower. Each team member will row 50 calories. The athlete will need to stay seated until the monitor reads 50 calories. After all four team members have rowed their 50 calories the first rower will now run 800 meters. When that athlete gets back they will tag the next member who will then run. This will be repeated until all four team members have run their 800meters. The athletes will run in the order they rowed. The teams' time will stop when the last member gets back to the mat the rower is on. The damper on the rower will be set at four.
Individual Event 2 (1:45 – 2:30)
Apollon’s Axle Deadlift for reps in 90 seconds.
Athletes will be able to pick from three weights (263, 303, or 353 pounds for men and 173, 213, and 263 pounds for women). The athlete will complete as many deadlifts as possible in 90 seconds. Your score will be number of reps multiplied by weight (i.e. 25 reps at 353 pounds = 8825). For the deadlift, full extension of the knees and hips must be reached with the shoulders behind the bar at the top. The hands must release the bar at the ground.
Affiliate Event 2 (3:00 – 5:00pm)
Each team will have to complete the following:
120 Overhead Squats (95/65lbs)
120 Pull-ups
120 Deadlifts 2” bar (213/123lbs)
120 Burpees
After all 480 reps are complete, the team will do 20 muscle-ups.
There is a 25 minute cap on this workout. For the overhead squat, take the barbell from the floor, not a rack. The movement starts with the barbell overhead (elbows locked out and arm blocking the ear). The hips must pass below the level of the knees at the bottom, and at the top, there must be full lockout of the knees, hips, and elbows with the barbell over the head (arm blocking the ear). You may squat-snatch directly into the overhead squat if you meet the above requirements, but that is not required. The pullups are "standard," meaning arms straight at the bottom and mid-neck to bar height at the top, with any kip permitted. For the deadlift, full extension of the knees and hips must be reached with the shoulders behind the bar at the top. The hands must release the bar at the ground. Burpees will start with the athlete standing upright. At the bottom, the chest and thighs must be on the ground. At the top the athlete will jump laterally over a small hurdle, while clapping the hands overhead (arms blocking ears). During the jump the torso must be vertical. For the muscle-up, full extension with the elbow straight at the bottom must be attained, and full extension with the elbows straight must occur at the top.
Sunday
Affiliate Event 3
Two person clean and jerk for reps in 90 seconds (275/185).
The bar starts on the ground with two athletes grasping the bar with both hands inside the collars. On the command of go, the athletes will lift the bar from the ground to the shoulders, then press, push press, or jerk the weight to overhead. At the top of the lift the knees and hips must be extended with the barbell overhead. The overhead position for a two person lift is arms closest to the plates locked out and blocking the ears. The inside arms may have a slight bend to account for athletes of different heights. Two women will go first, followed by two men. The total number of reps, both women and men, will be added together for the score.
There will also be two individual workouts on Sunday. The details of these will be released Saturday night.
I will say this. One will be a run, and the other will be… hard.regional competitions remain in the lead up to the CrossFit Games finals in Los Angeles this July. When it says "team" must do 20 muscle ups, does that mean that each member must contribute or can say some do more than others or some do none at all?

The final affiliate workout is dumb. You cannot safely do a clean and jerk with two people of different heights. Someone weighing 150lbs at 5 foot 6 cannot clean and jerk with someone 235lbs and 6 foot 4. This is getting a little stupid. Maybe they will provide step stools for the shorter competitor? Come on people...did any thought go into this at all?

Wifey :) You can bring your own if you have a favorite and we'll have some available, too.
Jake, give it a try. I think you'll find its more challenging than one might imagine. Plus, its a ton of fun to particiapte in and watch.
DW- the 90 second DL event will be with the 2 inch bars - specifically the Apollons Axel from Ironmind.
Skylar - half time show? We should try it! Each team will have one set of rings. The muscle-ups can be completed by anyone meaning that one person could do all 20, each team member could do 5, or any combination in between. As long as 20 are completed by the team we don't care how the work is divided.
Danial, again, I urge you to try it. It can (and has) been done by people of differeing heights. There will need to be some thought about height differences as teams decide who their two competitors will be though. Each team does have more than 4 memebers, so not everyone will compete in this event and selection for height will play a role in that selection, certainly.

Two person clean and jerk is a awesome team event that really emphasizes teamwork. One question though, on the over head squat standard. Can the bar drift behind the ears at the bottom of the squat? Does partial ear coverage count? Just wondering looks like a lot of fun, really excited. And I think Skylar is on to something, but sudden death should be a honeymoon carry mud run!

Yes the bar can drift behind the ears at the bottom and at the top too. Partial ear coverage is OK as long as we can't see any ear behind the arm, ear in front of the arm is OK.

If one person bails on part of the lift (say the jerk), and the other person is still continuing to lock out, it seems like there would be a significant chance of the bar falling at a not-so-safe angle.
I have no doubt that the movement has been tested with success, but it would be nice to get confirmation that bailing on this movement has been tested without injury also.

Jeff,
No, the hands don't need to come off the bar, they just need to release. If you were to release at the top, the bar would drop. If you release at the bottom, it's just an opening and closing of the hand. But the hand can remain in contact with the bar.
We will be getting some video up that should clear this one up. It is really just a good way to avoid huge bounces on the deadlift.
Also, not to Jeff, but just in case anyone is thinking it. If you drop the bar, you cannot catch it on the bounce.

I bet that when everyone tried the two person clean and jerk they looked around the gym and tried to match themselves up with like height before attempting it. I know some of you have said you have tried it and really liked it, but did you do it with someone 6 or 8 inches taller with a one foot height difference. My point is that we have only three male/female team mates per team. Some teams will have a real difficult time and not because of their ability, but because God did not make them the same height. I still think it's a silly workout and I do not care if anyone thinks I am complaining. I just don't think that 90 seconds of this type of work has any bearing on my athleticism or fitness level.

The Saturday schedule and Sunday start times can be found here: http://games2010.crossfit.com/blog/2010/05/northwest-regional-schedule/

Laurie and Kurtis,
Quick question about the affiliate chipper.
Are we going to have 4 total bars (two for OHS and two for DL) loaded with both male and female weights? Or will we have 2 total bars (one for OHS and one for DL) and be required to load and unload bars during the event when we rotate team members?
IMO these are great workouts. Thank you for all the hard work that goes into the planning of an event like this.

Jon,
I was going to wait to let that out of the bag to have some problem solving during stress, but since you asked, yes you will have one deadlift bar and one overhead squat bar and will have to switch out weights as needed. The collars will be muscle clamps, so they will be easy on and off.
Mark,
Yes, you will be able to dump from the lockout.

Can the "Non-Competing Coach" switch the weights or only the athletes that are competing in the chipper event?

57. Kurtis Bowler wrote...
Clay,
You can wear a belt.
Morgan,
You will have 25's and 10's for the Overhead Squat and 45's for the deadlift. For the 45's, one will be a bumper and one will be metal to make the change out faster.
Jon,
No, only the four athletes competing in that event will be able to change out weights.

I am surprised nobody has made much comment with the individual events. They seem pretty lame to me the first workout if done unbroken i wouldn't be surprised for it to be finished well under the 5 minute mark. Then 90 seconds for the second WOD. Seems like a lot of training for under 10 minutes of work. It looks like a lot more work went into planning the team WODs.

These are the same jokers who blame the judge when they don't sink a squat far enough and the rep does'nt count. Find a different sport. We don't want you here.
Kurtis and Laurie,
I was suprised when I started to see the same negativety come out when we announced our Sectional workouts. It's amazing the few bad apples that try to spoil the fun. As with our event and yours. Mike,
While its true we do own ONE axel and a second one on loan lives in the gym, an axel is hardly a unique piece of equipment. Most of our friends have them in their facilities here in Washington, at least. I'd imagine after their ample coverage in the CF Journal over the past year even more have them. They're a great training tool just like sandbags, GHD's, and rings - common tools of most CF Gyms.
Casey, if you bring your helmut can I borrow it?

1. Will judges be counting out loud for us so we don't need to worry about keeping track of reps?

3. Say one of the competitors has a broken finger, could they tape/strap their hand to the rower handle?

Andrew,
1. Yes, the judges will keep track of the count for you. They will let you know when you are done with an exercise. They will not count every rep out loud as that would get confusing for all involved. Four counts going on all at the same time. It will be made clear if a rep doesn't count and why, and it will be clear when a station is complete.
2. No, having a Coach in the mix yelling rotations and numbers would add chaos to an already chaotic event. I could also see potential for arguments about reps counting or not.
3. Athletes will not be able to tape or strap their hands to the rower.
