Event Recap: European Regional
Event results and information from across the pond.
The European regional qualifier for the 2010 Games are over, and it was a fantastic event. Despite some weather issues and some last minute changes, the event was a success. The athletes really brought everything they had to the event, and even though they were challenged with tasks that they had never done before, and movements that were completely alien to them, they all performed to the top of their abilities!
It became obvious from the beginning that no one had come just to get a good workout and meet new friends, everyone had come to test themselves against the best Europe had to offer, and hopefully qualify for the 2010 Games. The competition was fierce, and everything was put on the line in every workout. The crew from Iceland came out strong and soon established themselves in the top of the rankings. Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson occupied the first place after day one followed by Blair Morrisson who was in no way going to let the overall victory go without a fight. After these two athletes were a great number of competitors who were in contention, and very small margins separated the athletes.
In the female division Annie Thorisdottir came out guns blazing and went for an immediate knockout, only to see Samantha Briggs from the UK give her a very fair run for her money. After these two athletes were a pack of athletes gunning for the top placements, and the only thing that was certain before Sunday was that no one could take their spot for granted!
The master division only had 3 participants this year, but they fought very well indeed. The first workout of the day was an outdoor event, and they fought with a slippery bar, cold weather, and the fact that they were soaked in cold water on every push-up. A fantastic effort that was definitely inspirational to watch. As one spectator pointed out "if they can fight this hard in conditions like this- no one else has an excuse not to give their all!"
The affiliate division saw two teams from Iceland fight it out, and there was no way any of these two teams were going to let the other get away with the victory and the Icelandic bragging rights without putting up a fight.
Sunday came, and the big question was if someone had left something in the tank, and had their game plan ready from the beginning, or if the standings would change over the day?
Sveinbjörn and Blair soon established a solid lead and it was clear that they would be going to the Games but the third place was up for grabs. It became an epic battle between Mikko Aronpää and Richard Van Meerbeek, and Richard ended up taking the last spot in the last workout with a fantastic effort. He will be going to the Games along with Blair who finished up just ahead of Sveinbjörn.
Annie extended her lead on the second day and it was soon beyond a doubt that she would be going to be headed to Los Angeles in July, the question was who she would be accompanied by? Samantha, Jenny, and Ingunn had a super fight on the last two workouts, and by the smallest possible margin Samantha and Jenny Magnusdottis pulled out the last of the transfer positions.
