Australia Regional

Day 1 Recap: Australian Regional

First day of competition concludes in Australia.

The following update comes from Mick Shaw of CrossFit FX.
As the sun started to rise over the superb venue that is Randwick racecourse, the birth of this land mark Crossfit regional in Australia was about to take place.

Just after 6am the race course gates opened and 235 competing athletes flooded in to register their names, find their heats, which friends they were competing against and how the day was going to be set up; the atmosphere was electric.

Once old and new friends had exchanged pleasantries it was time to address the crowd and give them a lowdown of the days ahead. 61 Women, 79 Men, 8 Masters and 14 Affiliate Teams listened intently as the conduct of the workouts was given. Many of the athletes had never competed in front of such a large audience.

First up was the affiliate competition, which held 14 teams from rival boxes from all over Australia and NZ for the chance to compete in America.

After the chalk had settled on what was the first ever team competition in CrossFit for the regional it was time for some entertainment with Karate and NSW Weightlifting displays. With CrossFit's beliefs in fluidity and ease of movement, these performers demonstrated their wild and athletic abilities with grace and made them look effortless.

As the athletes and crowd settled in to Day 1’s afternoon schedule there was no letting up in enthusiasm from the Individuals, Masters and Affiliate teams. Each heat providing the necessary drama to keep the crowd baying for more.

Workout three proved to be a lot harder than it looked on paper. Some of the athletes said that running the out edge of the track was like running in soft sand.

Daniel Griffiths performance with the overhead squats was nothing short of amazing with his never-give-up attitude.
