Event Recap: Central & South American Regional
Proving that every second does really count on the road to the Games.
"Every Second Counts" was never more true than at this year's Central & South American Regional Qualifier. The organizers of this event check in with the following report.
As the sun rose on Day 2 of the Central & South American Regional Qualifier, Doug Oberbeck (CrossFit Bogota) faced a do-or-die situation - win the final event or face elimination. But winning the Men's final event still would not secure him a berth to the 2010 CrossFit Games. He also needed someone to place ahead of Joel Fridman (CrossFit Brasil) to put him ahead on points because if Joel finished in 2nd place then the Men's tie-breaker would go to Joel.
And as in so many athletic competitions, it went down to the wire. Geoff Tudisco (CrossFit Bogota), who came into Day 2 in first place, ended up deciding the fates of both Doug and Joel. The competitors started one minute apart for logistical reasons with Oriel Ortega (CrossFit Briga) leading, Doug starting one minute behind, Joel two minutes behind and Geoff three minutes behind. After completing the final 900m hill trail run, Geoff entered the stadium area to begin his 30 burpees.
The judging was strict and Geoff missed a total of 15 burpees. Upon completion of his 45th burpee the crowd and competitors were unsure of the final results. After several minutes, the Judges broke the silence and announced the official times for the Men's final event: Doug finished first with a time of 23:13, followed by Geoff with a time of 25:45 and Joel with a time of 25:46.
As for the Women's competition, it ended with Nelly Rodriguez (CrossFit Ecuador) and Johana Diago (CrossFit Bogota) finishing in first and second place respectively, which is how they entered the final day's event. Both women showed tremendous determination, but in the end Nelly's passion and desire resulted in her winning all but one event of the Women's competition (she and Johana tied in event 3).
The Caymanites are coming.
The Affilitate Team competition was dominated by CrossFit Cayman. Referred to as "the Caymanites," this is a team to be reckoned with. They swept all four team events, and advance to California to represent the Region. And a strong representative they will be. Stay tuned for more on this team in an upcoming post.
Presenting the representatives from Central & South America.
Qualifying Men
- Geoffrey Tudisco
- Doug Oberbeck
Qualifying Women
- Nelly Rodriguez
- Johana Diago
Qualifying Team:
- CrossFit Cayman (aka "The Caymanites")
This year's Central & South American Qualifier brought together CrossFitters from Brasil, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru proving that the CrossFit nation is alive and well in Central & South America. As the region's CrossFit population grows over the coming year, next year's contest should be an even greater success.
We would like to thank all the competitors, their friends and families who came from both far and near to cheer their loved ones. A huge thanks goes to the volunteers, especially the Officiating Team and our organizer Cathy, for donating their time and effort towards making this event a success. And finally a big thanks to our sponsors Nike and Gatorade for everything they provided.

What a great event. Thanks Geoff and all the competitors for everything. Burpees at 8,700 feet suck even more than at sea level....

What a weekend! I had an awesome time getting pummeled over and over again by those workouts, and there couldn't have been a more exciting finish to a sporting event.

A huge thank you needs to go out to all the judges, Cathy, Camilo, Bret, and all the other volunteers and support staff that put together an amazing event. Without you guys, these things can't happen. THANK YOU
