What is your athletic background?
I played baseball through high school, and some football until I dislocated my shoulder a few times and had to have surgery. After surgery I stuck to baseball and had a offers to play at some places but decided not to. I worked at the Cookeville Fire Department for 4 years to pay my tuition where I graduated with my Bachelors in Exercise Science, where I was introduced to CrossFit by one of my professors. I got my Level 1 Certification last June and opened up a gym with my cousin and another friend last August, but we can't afford the affiliation fee yet but will affiliate as soon as we can afford it. I currently work at our gym, Power Fitness, a local corporate wellness center, and I am a graduate assistant for Tennessee Tech for campus recreation.
What is your history with CrossFit?
I am a coach/athlete. I was introduced by my professor Chip Pugh who runs CrossFit Cookeville. I tinkered around with some of the workouts for a few months and added them into my regular chest/back and bi/tri routine, but it wasn't until my Level 1 Certification that I saw just what I was missing. On July 1, 2009 my cousin and I started doing strictly CrossFit in my Dad's barn with some equipment I bought and some we made and haven't looked back since. In August we decided to open up our own gym, and we're up to about 20-30 members right now.
What is unique and/or interesting about you as an individual or athlete?
There is nothing really unique about me. I was just brought up doing chores and yard work which I hated at the time but I have to thank both of my parents because its made me who I am today. I used to hate having friends over because my parents would see it as more people to help with work. Both of my parents and the rest of my family are very hard workers, but my parents especially. My mom worked/works three jobs and my Dad gets up at 4 every morning and doesn't stop until he goes to bed at 9 or 10. I have to give some credit to my high school baseball coaches, Butch Chaffin and Greg Tubbs for pushing us past that point and showing us the importance of hard work.

This guy is the real deal. It was an honor competing against him at Sectionals. One of the most well rounded CrossFit Athletes I have seen and extremely humble. With this guys work capacity he has a HUGE chance of making it to the top. Good luck Rich, see you in Jax.

Rich is my friend and trainer. As amazing as it is for him to take first in his first CrossFIt competition I can say he deserves it. I saw how hard he trained for it. I'd like to compete in the Oktoberfest Games and its good knowing I'm being trained by someone who obviously knows what it takes to win. Good luck in Jacksonville!

Rich,
I am a fellow Crossfiter! You are a huge inspiration to me and you should be very proud of your accomplishemnts in all the Crossfit Games.
I think the affiliate is $2000 - I can give you some ideas on how to raise the funds through personal training in a week or two.
Stay strong!
