Queensland Sectional

Matt Swift On The Queensland Sectional

It's a new week Down Under and 40 more athletes have advanced to the next level of competition. Queensland Sectional organizer Matt Swift, recaps the weekend and announces the 20 men and women who will advance to the Australian Regional Competition.

Day 2 of the QLD Sectionals was a huge success, and we have finalized our top 20 men and women from the section. The Men's champion was Doug Armstrong, owner of new affiliate CrossFit Rocks. Doug is a former CrossFit Brisbane athlete and I was so pleased to see him win the event after seeing his disappointment last year after narrowly missing qualification for Aromas. He placed 3rd at the Aussie regionals by 16 seconds! Doug recently suffered a serious ankle injury only several months prior to the Sectionals and demonstrated great tenacity to be fit to compete, let alone win. The female champion was CrossFit Brisbane athlete Yvette Maree, who is starting to emerge as a hot challenger for the Regionals this year. Yvette put in an amazing performance, winning all three workouts.

The crowd was on fire today, fueled by many close finishes and displays of never-say die effort. Our "Spirit of CrossFit" award went to Drummond Williamson from Coastal CrossFit. Drummond is a strong contender for Regionals and turned up this morning telling us that his wife was in labor and asking for his heat to be brought forward. He put in a cracking performance finishing overall 7 position, before returning to the hospital and is now the proud dad to baby Ruby Grace Williamson who was born at 1pm today. We also saw many notable performances throughout the weekend that won the hearts of the crowd. Attached is a photo of 19 year old Aidan O'Brien who taught himself to split snatch in the lead up to the event, and proceeded to smash out all reps in the Snatch workout using the rxd weight - not far off his bodyweight.

The crowd support continued till the very last heat, and our volunteers were outstanding all weekend long. We are humbled by the passion of the community in this part of the world.

The Queensland Sectional Qualifier was an example of CrossFit at its finest. The entire CrossFit Brisbane crew hosted a flawless event that has left everyone involved pumped to train harder than before.

The workout selection was the best I have seen given the limited amount of time, space and equipment that an event like this dictates. Time will tell, but I believe that those who performed well across these workouts should be well prepared for regionals.

Finally; Matt, you should be proud of the event you hosted, the athletes you have trained and the input that you have had into the CrossFit community in Australia.

Cheers,

Chris Saliba

What a weekend!!!!!

Some amazing performances and inspiration from people you don't expect it from those you do and every person gave 100% for the 2 days.

Big thanks to Matt, Wendy, Donna and Danny for organising and running a very successful Sectional and making sure the WOD's were challenging enough to allow the top 20 athletes to represent QLD in Sydney in May. Matt has put a lot of hard work into the event and he can be very pleased with the result. Big thanks also to the volunteers who ensured movement standards were top notch and reps redone if not adaquate. To the competitors who battled hard for two days, you guys are amazing.

To my guys from Crossfit Gold Coast, to get 8 athletes going to Sydney to represent QLD is awesome and to the guys who competed and didn't make it I am just as proud. For 4 of my guys this was there first competition and they did amazingly well.

Looking forward to getting to Sydney and mixing it with the best Australia has to offer.

I'll look forward to catching up with you guys in Sydney & a few drinks on Sunday night maybe?

I think I'll be on a high for a long time after this event. Kudos to Wendy, Matt, Danny and Donna - you guys are awesome and literally raise the bar each and every time. Pardon the pun :-)

Thankyou most sincerely to the volunteers for your time and your words of encouragement through each and every minute and each and every rep. It is very much appreciated and even though it's hard to acknowledge at the time when you're concentrating - I heard your words and would like to say thankyou.

And thankyou to my fellow competitors. I feel priveleged to have met you and to compete alongside you all.

Regards,

Thanks so much to the Red and Blue shirts with out you this wonderful event would not have run so well.

Everyone hit the WODs hard and the spirit was amazing, people who walked in on day one planning to scale one or more of the wods ended up knocking them out rxd. That is not to say the WODs where easy, far from it, but that the energy and support from spectators and other compeditors alike made you feel like you could do anything.

We are now looking forward to the Regionals, as well as the affiliate cup.

Thanks once again everyone for a wonderful weekend.

Well done guys and girls over yonder!! I've only had time to skim the latest posts but I'll be back to check it out better after some sleep!

Over here in Perth we are down to single digits in our countdown to the WA, SA, NT Sectionals on this weekend in Perth at CrossFit Perth, Joondalup. The space we have is huge and our volunteers have already been busy bees to get the warehouse setup for Saturday.

Jas has posted the first two WODs so trot on over to www.crossfitperth.com.au to check 'em out. Woot!

Bring it on!!
