South Carolina (inc. NC) Sectional

Interview: Andy Hendel - NC/SC Sectional Director

Insight on Sectional programming from the Carolinas.

Andy Hendel had his hands full planning and organizing the North Carolina/South Carolina Sectional which took place over the weekend of March 6th and 7th. 118 Athletes made a showing for this particular sectional, dwarfed only by the number of spectators in attendance, nearly 500 total.

In the video by Again Faster, Hendel gives us a quick rundown of his programming strategy for his event, given his spacial and equipment limitations, though a lack of a pull-up bar didn't keep him from thoroughly testing the competitors.

More recently, Andy wrote about the event now that the dust has settled:

"The NC/SC Sectional met all expectations and surpassed some too! The event went off without a hitch. The warehouse provided the necessary space, the volunteers and judges worked well together and the athletes seemed to have an excellent experience.

Thinking about each of the events and analyzing each exercise, would I have done anything differently? When only 14 girls finished the second event I wondered if I had made the workout too difficult? The dead lift was 155 pounds, the rope ascent 15 feet, and the box jump 20 inches. Wow! These are all standards of the main site.

I am a huge fan of HQ programming and if you are going to compete in the CrossFit Games at any level I feel you should be competent with 99% of the posted WOD's on this site. If you shy away from your weaknesses it's going to come back and bite you in the ass! That's life! I felt the overall programming met the demands these athletes will need to compete at the Regionals and hopefully the Game.

Every athlete gave it their all for two days and it was inspiring to all those present. There are going to be some growing pains, but I honestly believe the true competitors will raise themselves to any level."
